Situational Awareness for Safety and for Oil & Gas personnel
First what is Situational Awareness? Everyone keeps talking about Situational Awareness but very few actually explain what Situational Awareness really is and how Situational Awareness can be applied to safety and our work environments. Basically Situational awareness is being aware of what is happening around you. Being aware of whats around you and whats happening around you- so that nothing happens to you. Its about looking at the environment around you, your team and crew mates, your tools and processes that you have- anything that without paying attention could be a threat to your health or safety or a threat to the health or safety of your crew mates.
Sometimes we hear of incidents involving a newbie or new hire. We hear of incidents happening to people who are affected by fatigue. Why? See our our knowledge, experience and education enables us to have this Situational Awareness and understand what is going on around us and helps us to determine if it is safe. For example- if you see a bright right snake that’s rearing itself up and hissing loudly – that’s a sign you need to keep away. But a young child without your knowledge or experience may not see it that way. Or think of F1 Drivers who have to make split second decisions and not crash. How can they be aware of whats happening around them – when they may not be in control.
Situational Awareness is very individual and very different from individual to individual. Yet we work in the same place or environment and are supposed to use our Situational Awareness to make decisions that are supposed to keep us safe and at the same time we instruct others.
Since Situational Awareness is only as accurate as the individuals perception- don’t you think that this seems to be left to chance? How can we improve this Situational Awareness or perception or ability to read the situation. Why should you improve it? Then there are cases where people who are very experienced and knowledgeable still suffer from not able to read the situation or not being alert enough. Almost likea temporary loss or lack of situational awareness. Sometimes there is too much happening for someone to concentrate. When I drive sometimes, the child is talking to me and the other is crying while I am driving- how can I concentrate and spot those things that could pose a serious threat to your health and safety.
How can you improve your Situational Awareness?
One must get in the habit of regularly stopping to do mental checks. Looking at the environment, the people, the tools- looking at whats being done and how. Then asking if any of these are out of place. If you see something unsafe or spot a hazard, don’t walk by – take responsibility to deal with it. If you feel you are in any immediate danger to your health or safety STOP work immediately and inform your supervisor.
Alternatively you can engage Safety@Work Consultancy who carry out consulting and training activities around Winning Hearts and Minds. One of the modules we carry is the Situational Awareness.
